Five (More) Data Scientists to Watch

recently asked the People Pattern data science team to help me keep tabs on some of the data scientists they most admire. They didn’t disappoint or fall short–be sure to check out our first iteration of “Data Scientists to Watch” here. Like any great feature, one go around wasn’t nearly enough, and so we decided to compose a sequel (more on par with The Godfather Part II and less with Speed II: Cruise Control).

Check it out and let us know what you think:

Five (More) Data Scientists to Watch

1. Paco Nathan
Databricks

Paco Nathan is what we call a major influencer in both tech and media. He is an author, speaker, and instructor for workshops in data science, machine learning, and cluster computing; and a recognized expert and evangelist in functional programming and distributed systems.

2. Olivier Grisel
INRIA (French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation)

Olivier Grisel is a major contributor to scikit-learn, and an active speaker on machine learning and Python. He has extensive knowledge on data processing tools like Apache Hadoop, Apache Pig and Spark, and utilizes Cloud Computing technologies to “automate cluster deployments and continuous integration for data-intensive applications.”

3. Richard Socher
Computer Science PhD, Stanford

Richard Socher recently completed an important data science dissertation on deep learning for Natural Language Processing and computer vision. He is a visionary in machine learning and computer vision, and was featured in Wired regarding his sentiment analysis model.

4. Philip Resnik
University of Maryland

Philip Resnik researches computational linguistics, with interests “both in the application of natural language processing techniques to practical problems such as machine translation and sentiment analysis, and in the modeling of human linguistic processes (especially related to lexical semantics).”

5. Monica Rogati
VP of Data, Jawbone

Monica Rogati is a data scientist at Jawbone, formerly structuring and creating algorithms for LinkedIn. Her background is in applied machine learning, data science, social network analysis, recommender systems, statistical text mining and multilingual search, and she was recently named one of Fortune Magazine’s Big Data All-Stars.

Again, this list only scratches the surface of data scientists the People Pattern team admires, and who’s tactics we emulate daily. Who should we feature in our next round?
